At Ayla Health, we’re often asked why we don’t focus on weight loss as the primary goal of our program. After all, isn’t that what most nutrition programs are about?

But here’s the truth: weight isn’t the best measure of health. And chasing weight loss, often through restrictive diets, quick fixes, and unsustainable meal plans, rarely leads to lasting change. That’s why we do things differently.

Health Is So Much More Than a Number on the Scale

Your health is influenced by so much more than your weight. How you feel day to day, your energy levels, your digestion, your mood, your relationship with food. These are the things that matter most and are often what we’re hoping for when we set weight loss as a goal. We want to feel good. And they’re precisely what we focus on at Ayla Health.

We help people build food confidence, so they can make choices that are right for them and their bodies. These food choices are not based on rules or guilt, but on understanding evidence-based nutrition, building food skills and learning to self-trust.

What the Science Really Says About Weight

The idea that losing weight automatically leads to better health is deeply ingrained—but it’s not the whole story.

In fact, research shows that weight loss does not lead to better health outcomes. It’s the behaviours that often accompany it: eating more whole foods, moving your body regularly, managing stress, and sleeping well (not an exhaustive list). These are the true drivers of improved health, whether or not the number on the scale changes.

But here’s the catch: when weight loss is the only goal, those healthy behaviours often fall away once the “diet” is over. Or if you’re doing the healthy things but they’re not “working” (aka the scales are not going down) then you become disheartened and stop. Yet these healthy behaviours are improving your health.

This is why most diets fail long term—and why weight cycling (repeatedly losing and regaining weight) can actually be harmful to your health. In addition to this, not all behaviours that lead to weight loss are good for health. Restrictive diets, laxative abuse, excessive exercise, and fasting can lead to malnutrition, deficiencies, muscle loss and increase your risk of poor mental health. This kind of disordered eating is also linked to an increased risk of developing an eating disorder down the track.

Weight loss has been unfairly taking the credit for what healthy behaviours actually accomplish. That’s why Ayla Health focuses on the habits that lead to better physical and mental wellbeing—regardless of whether they lead to weight loss.

One Habit at a Time = Real Change

Instead of offering strict meal plans, labelling foods as “good” or “bad” and expecting you to change everything about how you eat overnight, Ayla Health teaches you one nutrition principle at a time and then shows you how to make it part of your everyday life.

Each habit-building module inside our mobile app combines micro-learning with practical meal planning, so you can learn, apply, and stick to healthy habits without the stress. No more confusion or overwhelm. Just small, manageable steps toward long-term health.

These little changes add up. It’s called the accumulated benefit of marginal gain. Each little habits builds on the other, but because you’ve tackled change incrementally, you’re not overwhelmed with new things. It should feel sustainable and realistic. Thats when you can do it long term.

Why Weight Loss Isn’t Our Goal (But a Side Effect)

We know that many people come to us feeling frustrated, stuck, and exhausted from years of dieting. Maybe you’ve lost weight before, only to gain it back. Or you’ve followed a plan perfectly for a few weeks, but couldn’t maintain it long-term.

That’s because most weight-focused programs are built on short-term success, not long-term health. When the only way you measure success is through a number of a set of scales going down, you’re going to miss all the other great things that are happening to your body.

At Ayla Health, we focus on consistency, not perfection. We support you in creating an eating pattern you can actually stick to. One that supports your physical health, mental wellbeing, and fits into your lifestyle. When you nourish your body consistently and take care of your health holistically, weight loss might happen. But it’s not the goal. It’s just one possible outcome of living well.
